Start by drawing a heptagon.
Then reflect the heptagon in each of its sides.
This would cause overlap.
So only reflect the center portion.
The part in the middle that gets left out
is replaced with the reflection from the opposite vertex.
We abandon Euclid's admonition not to use measurement.
And measure the distances to some of the outer points in order to maintain regularity.
You will also notice that many of the points line up and we use that as guides as well.
Finally we have all the lines as desired.
Since the canvas paper is somewhat porous and irregular,
we place a thin layer of gesso on the places where we want the silver gilding.
Then we apply the size and the silver gilding.
I never let the size sit long enough to get tacky.
Which makes things more difficult.
And using high quality German silver makes things easier as well.
I always use the paper backing silver gilding.
It is easier.
Anyway, some of the complications made the silver come off in a sort of aged look.
I don't hate it.
I tried to cover up some of that
where you could see the white gesso behind it
by using a thin wash of green terra verde.
I don't hate that either.
Brush away the silver where it is sticking outside the intended areas.
Color in.
I used my favorite Venetian red here.
Mixed in with the little metallic orange.
All the watercolors are handmade using pigment
and watercolor medium prepared from Gum Arabic.
You cant colour it with two colours.
So for the third color I used an earth yellow.
Make the borderlines bold.
I went over it with that blue twice.
Mixing a little Van Dyke brown into the blue the second time
just to make it darker.
I put some matte varnish on the borderlines
to prevent the blue from leaking back into the main areas during the next step.
Add the swirlies and the marbling.
Wet the area with water.
Add a liberal amount of pure watercolor medium.
Place the main color in one corner.
Place the secondary color, usually white, in another corner.
Mix enough that they become marbled,
but not so much that they become homogeneous.
